About us

Bioengineering is one of the newest departments of Izmir Institute of Technology (IYTE) Faculty of Engineering. In this rapidly developing field, it was decided to establish a Bioengineering Department in 2013 in order to strengthen the scientific infrastructure and training programs of IYTE. This decision was put into practice in 2014 and our department has started to work to establish a dynamic and productive academic staff with international academic experience that can make a difference in its field.

The main aim of the department, which currently has 6 faculty members; is to host high-impact researches in the main fields of bioengineering such as biomaterials, biomechanics, bioinstrumentation, biosensors, cellular and molecular engineering, pharmaceutical technologies, bioinformatics and synthetic biology, and to train expert manpower in these fields.

After the academic qualifications were achieved, the faculty members of the department started to educate students [BSc in Bioengineering, MSc in Bioengineering, and PhD in Bioengineering (jointly with Dokuz Eylül University Institute of Health Sciences)]. Within the Bioengineering Department; many young graduates who have completed their undergraduate studies in Bioengineering, Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer or Software Engineering, Electrical-Electronics Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy, etc. are continuing their master and doctoral education.

Higher Education Council (YÖK) decided to open the undergraduate program in our department and the first undergraduate students were accepted in the academic year of 2018-2019.

YÖK has approved our application to open a Bioengineering PhD Program. Applications for the first Bioengineering PhD Program were received in the spring semester of the 2018-2019 academic year.

Department of Bioengineering currently accepts applications for faculty positions to expand its education and research endeavors.
